Rubies have been the most valuable stones for centauries making them the highest priced stones among the coloured Gem stones.

Ruby is considered one of the four precious stones, together with sapphire, emerald and diamond. It is called "Ratna Raja" meaning the king of Gems. A ruby is a pink to blood-red coloured gemstone. Belonging to the corundum mineral family.The Sparkling red colour is due to chromium impurities flowing in to the gems stones during its cooling process making them glowing in energy.

Long before Diamond became popular,coloured stones are the ones being favored and valued by the oldest of civilizations and cultures. It is believed Red colour of the rubies resembles love, passion, energy, protection, prosperity strength and power to the wearer making the most critical stones in the crowns of many monarchies. Finest quality rubies are produced in Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, Mozambique and Tanzania.

Compared with other ruby producing countries Sri Lankan Rubies shows orange to red florescence under ultra violet light with the presence of chromium and the absence of Iron. Thus the presence of florescence in corundum mostly indicates that the gem stone origin from Sri Lanka.

Combination of Vivid Red colour, clarity, transparency, cut, Size, facet are most critical factors influencing the value of Ruby. Color is the single most important factor deciding the price of ruby than clarity. Most of the rubies occurring through the world are with inclusion and impurities. Even the highly priced rubies contains tiny inclusions which is not apparent to the naked eye. Rubies that are perfectly transparent, with no tiny flaws, are more valuable than those with inclusions.

Pigeon Blood rubies are the highest priced in ruby gemstone per carat. In a recent auction of Christie in 2015, Crimson Flames 15 carat Pigeon blood ruby is sold for record price of $18 million at $1.2 Million per Carat. Dubbed the Sunrise Ruby, weighed an astounding 25.59 carat ruby sold at a price of $30.3 million in Sotheby's Geneva in May 2015 holding the record price for the ruby.

As red colour of resembles power love passion the rubies takes the place in royal families.In the Royal Collection of England, A gold ring set with a pale but nearly flawless ruby into which a portrait of Louis XII of France is carved can be seen.
